Boat was not there. I think it is in New London CT for now.
Turntable was the only method with small space to turn engines.
Not enough room there for a wye or loop track for turnarounds.

Some videos I took yesterday at Greenport and Ronkonkoma New York.

Greenport is a nice place to visit for a day or stay for a weekend.

Great photo journal. I was quite surprised to see a farm
scene, I thought anything agricultural had long since
gone from Long Island. Coastal shots look heavenly,
and the interior of that fast train looks very
comfortable.

Hopefully that is a train buff in that white house next to the
tracks! Conceivably, that white SUV could unwittingly back
onto the tracks while getting out. That would really spill
his coffee! The architecture looks to be at least 1920's,
perhaps earlier, and one imagines the coal from passing
steam locomotives did not do the drying laundry any
favors.

My friend "Crusty" the engineer, recently struck an
auto carrier stuck on the mainline tracks. It was
carrying only one brand new Prius, when the low
draft of the trailer hung up on the gradient over
the rails. The Prius was flipped into the air and
landed on top of the signal box, Prius: 1, Signal Box: 0.
The owner of the truck then cursed out Crusty and
the conductor for not stopping in time!!!

Enjoyed the vids, BTW, perfectly framed and shot.

IF I did live there I'd move the station back about 10 feet or more from the tracks
put up platforms to get on the trains anyway & install a double sided signal I could control

Makes me think what a rather pleasant sort of job that would be
to have, cruising on rails through the pretty landscape. Home
every night. My engineer friend spends a lot of time parked
on sidings in the waste lands waiting for other freights to
pass, lives out of a suitcase and spends many nights
in very remote Texas or New Mexico towns. Still, he enjoys
his life on the rails and makes the most of it.

They are even cooler when you see them in person Ben.
As in today and after a restful nap I was ready to go.

Earlier today in the morning near my house in Bayside Queens New York.

Mid afternoon we see crossing gates at Sea Clif New York.

The station at Sea Cliff.

North view of the tracks at the station.

Another view of the station.

Another view of the station.

Another view of the station.

We are now at the Glen Street Station in Glen Cove New York.

Another view of the station.

Another view of the station.

Another view of the station.

Another view of the station.

Westbound Long Island Railroad train approaching the station.

The train is at the Glen Street Station.

Nice looking church building in Glen Cove New York.

Another view of the church building.

Tracks near the other Glen Cove station.

Crossing gate at the Glen Cove station.

Glen Cove station. The second station in Glen Cove New York.

Another view of the station.

Another view of the station.

Eastbound tracks lead to Oyster Bay.

Another view of the station.

Crossing gate by the station.

Crossing gate by the station.

Looking north at the crossing.

Looking south at the crossing.

Oyster Bay New York train station.

Being restored to its original look.

Looking toward the end of the line at its yard.

Sometimes it is full of train sets.

Pedestrian crossing leads to the bay.

Oyster Bay itself.

Pretty park at the waterfront.

Few people today due to the fear of the virus.

Not me but I live alone so I have little to lose.

I went to feed the seagulls.

They were happy to be fed.

Most satisfying to help them.

Far more seagulls than humans.

They followed me back to the park.

They would have followed me to the train station if I had more bread.

As the sun sets we see the flag set to honor the virus victims.

The museum collection near the station.

The train arrives in Oyster Bay. Will leave soon after with me on board.

Hour later I see colorful decorations for Easter.
Hour after that I am home and safe from the virus.
I know that it is foolhardy to travel but I take chances.

That about the 1830s reminds me of something from the 1880s in a 600 page book about the history of US railroad freight cars by John H. White Junior. (a few months ago got it from a friends of the library sale, for $28, cover price $125!)

Pages 392 & 393,
Between 1884 and 1893, Long Island RR superintendent Isaac D. Barton, ran piggyback trains for produce farmers "living on the south end of the island" to Manhattan, reducing an 8 hour road trip to a 90 minute train ride.
Local farmers initially thought the idea was silly & local innkeepers along the wagon route weren't exactly big fans of the railroad's idea, so a free trial trip was offered to carry 10 farm wagons.
20 wagons came for the 2nd trip.
And in short order 3 trains a week were making the trip.
