Folks:

So far, the sample size is still too small to make much of it, but it is intriguing that the results look like a plot of a 'demographic echo' with an approximate 30-year period. And it cuts off dead center in Generation X. I seem to be the only person in the 31-40 age group that likes trains.

But anyway, the 30-year period makes sense, as that is roughly the median age for having children. Is this limited survey evidence that the generation that grew up in the 'golden age of HO scale/tinplate trains' is passing its interest to a new generation?

You're not the only 30 year old who likes trains. My dad has liked trains since he was in his 30's when I got my first train set 10 years ago.

But so far, I'm the only one in that age bucket, here, and now, and that sort of thing means everything when we are talking demographics. ^_^

57 for me. First train set (Tyco) at about 6. Had a 4 x 8 layout from about 7th to 10th grade and been an armchair model railroader since with a few small temporary n scale layouts over the years. My kids (girls) loved playing with "daddy's trains" when I had them up. The 10 year old will play but the teen could not care less. I know collect 50's Tyco and play with my n scale on Kato track.

I'm somewhat similar to that actually. I'm more of an armchair modeller too but I actually run the stuff I collect. I collect H0 and N, but I also have one 0 gauge item. which is a NYC Marx caboose.

I'm looking at 63, as for my body everything has either dried up or leaks. This earth suit is getting rather stiff, but it still works. So I will enjoy life, you guys and my trains for a little while longer. I have been doing trains since I was about 8.
