I was fortunate to be there on a sunny day since most days have cloud cover at the summit.
Recently the company has run more diesel than steam to lower costs and improve visibility.
Still a worthwhile place to visit if you are in New Hampshire. Their number is 603 278 5404.

I think I have a train video somewhere in my house that talks about certain cog railways in the states. Thanks for showing us your photos!

This one & the Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Colorado Springs, CO
This one is using a diesel powered cog train now

There's a third, but it's only about a mile long and is part of the Quincy Mine tour in Hancock MI.

Man, I love those cog steam engines. It's a shame that they don't run them that much anymore.Apparently this was all because of certain environmentalists that thought they were bad.

Fortunately, they still run some steam. A friend of mine was there a couple of weeks ago and rode a steam train up. He said it was the last steam run for the 2014 season. There was plenty of snow and wind on the mountain top, then, too.

That's why I said "not very much" because according to some articles, they appear to still be running certain types of steam locomotives so that's nice to hear.

Beautiful NH. Why the heck did I leave. There's an
interesting backstory, one I cannot link to because
I'm on the company computer right now, regarding
a runaway on this line involving a locomotive named
"Peppersass." Some kind of transmission linkage snapped
(I think they called it a "jack shaft) and the whole skunk
works flew back down the hill until it hit a curve
and the entire assemblage was shattered.
A few luck survivors jumped early, getting pretty
bashed up in the process. This happened in 1929, and
the remains of the locomotive, perhaps, is that #1 in
the photo. A later derailment in 1967 resulted in eight fatalities.

What's the old saying "cut off your nose to spite your face"?
I know nothing of this railroad's economic outlook and they will have to do what they need to do to survive - but it brought to mind another railroad I have ridden quite a bit in WV - the Cass Scenic Railroad. I can't imagine it operating successfully with diesel power, as it's gear driven Shays are what it's all about.
(May be a moot point anyway as I don't think there is a diesel powered counterpart in existence that could take their place).

No regular roads up there Ben. Hikers do cross the track occasionally. No signals.
There is a automobile road on the other side of the mountain which reaches the summit.

Seldom you see clear skies at the summit.
Touch up the photos a little.

Cool old time video of their original steam engine and other engines.

Original engine shows near the end of this video. Retired in 1929 after a bad accident.

Cool autumn video in the late afternoon. Not my videos.

Cool!
Spouse and I rode it under steam a couple of years ago; had a great time. I remember the conductor describing the only connection between coach and locomotive was a 3/8" rope; good for two years; and this one had been replaced 23 1/2 months ago.
And the mind game of being in the coach, a rectangular box pitched at an aggressive angle, looking out the window at the trees; the mind said the window frame was vertical so all those trees were growing at some grotesque angle.
On the way back down the coach brakes were applied by the conductor using a manual wheel; I asked how he knew when to apply more or less; he said it was based on "the feel of the tap, tap, tap" of coach hitting the locomotive. There is no coupler between locomotive and the coach.
