The first train set that I ever received was a Marx that I got for Christmas and I still have it! Thought you all might enjoy seeing this relic.

Hey; that is cool. My first set was also a Marx. My parents could never have afforded a Lionel or American Flyer set. But in about 1963 I got a nice set that had 2 trains running on a figure of 8 track. There was some type of relay that held one train at the crossing until the other train passed, then it would run and the other one would run up to the crossing and wait. This repeated over and over. One engine was a 2-4-2 I think and the other was a SW something. I cannot remember if the whole set was in Penn-Central or New York Central paint so maybe the set was 1964 since I seem to recall that being the year of the merger of New York Central and that other railroad.

Like a fool, I gave the whole thing away in my teenage years. I do still have the station shed and the water tank though.

I have a few Marx sets besides my original Marx sets and I am also a member of the Marx group on Yahoo. The folks in the Yahoo Marx group do a lot of custom painting and kitbashing

if you look closely you will notice that I have done a bit of customizing on this one. I couldn't take the cast on trucks and finally cut them off of the cars and tender and replaced them with nice up-to-date free rolling trucks with metal wheels and couplers that actually work. I put wooden undercarriages in all of the cars except for the gondola. The locomotive got a super-bright battery powered LED light and a little touch up on the paint. One of these days I'm going to go whole hog on the locomotive and make better side rods and valve gear because I just cant seem to leave well enough alone.

I cant help but wonder just how many of these sets were made, it seems as though everybody got one in 1971. We all got one though, that's the important thing!

Here's my Marx stuff. I just display it on a shelf in my house.

I got it at my first train show for $5.

This is the original caboose from my first ever Marx set. I put a metal chassis with trucks under it and repainted it for Mopac. The window frames in the copula have been modified and better running boards have been installed.

My first HO set was a Marx F3a-b New Haven Freight set. It was in perfect shape, but I do remember there was a flat car included. I think I remember the car having some sort of clip on it and the box insert had a space for what appeared to be a load, but the load was long gone. It was purchased in 1984 for $20 and it included an Athearn New haven Snow Bird F7a-b set. I sold the set for $50 to a guy who placed an ad in Model Railroader and I kept the Athearn diesels.
