Walking around the train show Saturday a couple selling mostly Lionel had a "Zenith" train set out in the box for a whopping $20.
I bought it because it's an interesting hybrid - it has a Mehano 2-6-0, a Mehano issue of the copy of the Tyco streamine caboose, an AHM/Mehano tank car and box car, and where it gets interesting is the flat car with two containers. The box illiustration is a Tyco car, like the Sea Land car. The photo is touched up a bit for the tag line under the Zenith logo. But the car in the set? Another Mehano. The kicker? It's the same color and has the same road number and AT&SF on it as a Tyco car. Combine that with the caboose that came in some late sets and it's possible this is a Tyco set. But - no markings on it anywhere for a brand. The transformer is a plastic case AHM I've never seen before.
But it didn't come with any paperwork to try to track it down and no copyright on the box. Judging by the stuff it in it must be 1990-1995 or so.
I bought it because the engine alone usually goes for twice what they wanted. Not sure yet what I'm going to do with it, but I'll try and get some photos this week and post them.
I also got a Tyco Atlantic Coast Line streamliner set. Cars a little beat up and the engines whipped (powered A is junk, shell cracked up the nose), but for $20 it was cheap and I figured when will I see another one.

Interesting. LG acquired most of Zenith in 1995, and soon after bought it outright. This might have been an attempt to get higher visibility for the brand.
So many of the old electronics and appliance companies I grew up with are gone, now existing in name only with some foreign company owning the rights so they can slap a well known badge on Chinese made products. Zenith, Grundig, Sunbeam... the list goes on.

Well, what do you know, there it is on eBay.
I wonder if only the prototype set had the Tyco car in it?

This set is what got me into trains!!! It was the first HO thing I ever owned!! We got it in 93 for my brother being I wasn't born yet, then still used it in 97 when I was born but by then we had bought more locos and rolling stock etc. But it was still the thing that brought us into the world of HO trains. The ATSF 2-6-0 big Texaco tank car zenith limited flatcar with crates on it zenith limited boxcar and the red ATSF Caboose Still got every piece of equipment from that set! Just not the box.

That's the standard Mehano 2-6-0 sourced from I think a Pemco tender drive engine. They've made tons of them in various versions, including a chassis re-tool as a 4-4-0 and a camelback body shell re-tool. Most were sold as IHC products. Prototype is a Southern Pacific loco.

Ironic that I talked to someone about these a few weeks ago. He has been in the TV sales /repair biz for ever and told me that the Zenith sales rep brought these around to the dealers. I'm guessing back in the 60's or 70s. The guy I met has three of them....never opened.

Set is early 1990s era, so he can't have bought them in the 60s or 70s.

My mother bought that set brand new in 1993. I would assume it would have been made around hat time.
