My brother is modeling two TYCO GP20's in the SF Kodachrome scheme. He is not really a fan of this road but, it was an opportunity to go all out with the detailing. The dynamic brake blister is a Mantua part. He ordered new ones from Mantua Classics, a couple of years ago. Added the photo etch fan grill.

Nice project. The Tyco GP20 will make a nice model when detailed. For years it was the only game in town if you wanted a GP20 on your roster.

hi ray, this also what I like about tyco, mantua and blue box athearn, the sky is the limit detailing wise, and much more satisfying,at a price you control,a box of scrap locos,on the face of it,looks like rubbish not worth $10,could end up giving you enough to make some great looking models ken

Looking good! I think the Tyco/Mantua GP20 is one of the main reasons the Tenshodo GP20 didn't last later than the mid 60's. Cheap, good looking, easy to modify, and a reliable runner (with the MU-2 truck, of course). Put the shell on a Hobbytown chassis, and you've got the best looking, best running, and best pulling GP20 around until the P2K model some 30 years later!
Here's my Tenshodo, by the way:
The picture makes the paint look a lot better than it was. I've since repainted it and added Smokey Valley handrails. And I put in a coreless motor with a flywheel and a constant directional lighting system.
Darth Santa Fe, doing weird and challenging projects for the fun of it!

I remember considering a Tyco GP20 at Two Guys back in the 70's. I think it was red box era, as it had smaller flanges, handrails and opaque window glazing. I thought it was one of their best diesels.

Does or did BNSF even have any GP20's? It seems like both BN and Santa Fe got rid of thirst before the merger. BN was getting rid of anything with the EMD 567 through the 90's. That turbo was great out on the main, but just an expense for a local or switcher by the late 80's and 90's.

BN had a few. http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/bn/bn2060adb.jpg Didn't see any on the BNSF roster.

Someone has painted a Tyco GP20 in NYS&W colors. I found this on eBay.

Coincidentally enough, the real 1800 just got into an argument with a dump truck. The dump truck lost.

Well I'd sure hope that the dump truck lost! Was the GP20 ever repaired and put back in business?
Back in the day I seen a few of the Susq. going through my home town in Pennsylvania as I didn't live all that far from Altoona, PA....

John, that accident happened a week ago, and I found out about it yesterday. It doesn't seem like the Geep suffered much damage, but that dump truck looks like it's ready for scrap.
And not to get too far off topic, but Chinese Mikado 142 that they own just took out an SUV.

There must be a lot of drivers not paying attention, or trying to beat the train.

note the loco still smiling after the accident
The old "stop, look & listen" logo from the early days of railroads that were on crossing signs & sung by millions of children then & maybe today STILL apply today If its a tie YOU LOSE!!
Ever run over a pop can with your car? Well thats the same if your car was a loco & the pop can was your car
Sorry about the rant but you gotta watch for trains whether its a main line, short line or a tourst line
