Frank,

You're going to Steamtown to work on diesels? You'd better bring your supply of spare Athearn parts.

The Red Caboose Motel is in Lancaster.

I'm jealous, Frank. Was that on the generator or the traction motors (and do they even have brushes)?

Nelson : The traction motore have brushe sets at zero and 180 degreee ( top and botom ) like a open frame motor. The main generator has many 12 or 14 sets of 5 brushes each. Each brush is realy two.

Thanks for the picture, Frank. I always wondered if traction motors were brush type or induction, since you'd think dirt could foul the commutators. I can't believe the number of segments.

The old DL&W MU's ran on 5000 V DC, so they had definitely had brushes.

It looks like you're having a good time.

Nelson,
Now thats only the "DC" traction motors! The new AC motors I believe are induction!

Confusing, to say the least....

Thats why they are not to run a AC loco with a DC loco.....the AC locomotives doesn't have the fragile parts that a DC lcoo does! Which makes the speed on one to the other slightly different....

But with todays electronic knowledge, I believe they're over-comming that whole opperating guideline between DC locomotives and AC locomotives.....

Nelson ; good morning. 3254 was being repaired. on saturday to get to crew lunch room you have to pass 3254. a worker there said thay had finished it. It was not connected to its tender. I would guess that they need to be reunited, and the loco inspected, and test run.

Here is a the Anthracite Historical Society's CNJ RS-3 #1554. It is leased to the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad. They have to keep it in the original CNJ paint. It is seen often at Steamtown in Scranton PA. That is where these 2 photos were taken.

Steamtown doesn't even deserve it's name anymore, it should be called Dieseltown since most of their locos are diesels now. They still have some pretty cool trains though.

At my last visit the EMD F3B was sitting behind F3A #664. Good photos of it cant be taken at this time because it sits between 2 box cars and a building wall. It has received its number and is #664B. Both locomotives are owned by the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society. The will be a running locomotive. The pair sometimes with F3A 663 will be head ending many fan trips out of Steamtown.
* These are the best photos of the F3B #664B I have gotten to date.

Hi Sean. Got back late from my sons house. Couldn't sleep so am writing this. Did some rewiring Sunday on the DL&W F3B 664B. Four others worked on the FA2, The Delaware and Lackawanna wants to lease the FA when done with a unique dual usage lease. They also will do some of the restoration of this Alco diesel locomotive. It was explained only once to me, so I can't really comment or the proposed lease. The Jest of it is D&L will use it for day to day use and the Anthracite Railroad Historical Society will still be able to use it to pull excursion trains on the D&L tracks. Somehow they have worked this out. The D&L which is almost entirely powered with Alco diesels has the expertise to do its end of the work, and the ARHS their part of the restoration. The D&L has always been a wonderful host Railroad line to Steamtown, and both giving the area railroad historical society's a great place to showcase and use their equipment.
I did find out for sure that the FA2 will be going inside once Steamtown closes operations for the year shortly. That will allow the volunteers to work inside in a heated area on the FA2 stripping all the sheet metal except I guess the formed cab shell and replacing all rusted out structural members so new treated sheeting can be applied and properly painted. It is what has been already done the F3B. still I also hope the F3B goes inside too. It is cold out there during the winter.
