I was in a local thrift store about two weeks ago when I came across this Tyco slotcar set. It's not in great shape but it gives me something to tinker with and for $4.00 I'm not complaining 
Here's what I got:
The original 1973(?) set box.
I think all the track and original paperwork is there. A few of the locking tabs are broken, but I can probably rig something up.
Here are the two cars. The orange one is a Tyco which I was able to get working. The black one is an AFX. The motor runs, but it just spins its tires on the track 
Some misc. parts. The firechief car is missing the entire front end assembly.
And finally three powerpacks that were in the box. I couldn't get the Tyco or Strombecker packs working...the AF pack I didn't try.

Cheeze, I once used some CA Glue (hobby Glue for plastic) to hold two pieces of old style Tyco slot track together. It's pretty strong stuff as I mailed some of this track around America and it held...
There's also "track repair clips" that can be found on ebay, but I found using them to be problematic years ago. They hold so tightly that the track seems to raise up a little and create a snag or bump at the joint.

That brings back memories. That was the same year my friend across the street got his TycoPro set. He ditched the cars and we went with AFX exclusively. It sounds like the Trans Am just has dried out slicks.
Broken connectors are common, and happened to AFX track, too, but their track repair clips worked okay. The older Aurora T-Jet track had steel pins and plastic locks, and was much sturdier.

Hey Walt. I'll take a look at the repair clips sometime (maybe they've improved?). I don't have room for anything permanent so glue may not be the best idea right now XD
NP: The tires on the trans am feel like dried out sponges...I'd imagine that IS the problem XD The Tyco car on the other hand has a tire that's almost melting O_O I think there's a slotcar store near my work. Maybe I'll pay them a visit

Nice pick-up. Can't go wrong for $4.  Sponge tires are available repro'ed, not sure about the other types. I've bought some of those track clips, they're still available today. I used them on a small 2x3 corkboard slot layout I am building to hold the track together better. Have fun with it!
