Here is the set contents in its entirety. The caboose has had some minor repairs (shipping damage) and the tank car is on its way to the shop for heavy repair as well. The other 3 pieces are mint. The track/transformer are inside the box. I will take individual pix of each piece once I get the tank car worked on (needs a new frame and platform repairs). In the meantime enjoy.

Ken,
This set is one of the most sought after Athearn rarities. Its unknown how many sets were made but they are very very hard to come by. As of 1998 the authors of the Standard Guide to Athearn Model Trains only knew of 2 complete sets and one box.

Thank you! Yeah the paint scheme is quite sharp. the colors are Great Northern glacier green and B&O deluxe gold from what I can gather from paint matching.

Each piece individually head to rear:
GP7 (9) with Hi-F rubberband drive. these did not come with handrails or airtanks. But Athearn did install (and paint) the dynamic brake hatches and the step guards.

42' Chemical Tank Car. This car required the most restoration - I had to replace the frame, brakestand and the platform. The replacement is painted a hair lighter than the original which had a broken prong but it looks right to me and the car is back to mint condition. Its my favorite car of the set.

What an attractive color scheme, Larry! Now that I know about it, I'm keeping my eyes peeked at upcoming swap meets- that's how I chanced upon that Motorola gondola I have.

When you think about it, a set like this from a vendor is a great good will builder. It's a wonder that other firms don't do this- or, as it dates from the pre-Horizon Hobby purchase of Athearn (?), perhaps this promotional stuff is a thing of the past.

Great find- enjoy!

Athearn still makes promotional run stuff (RTR mostly). When they resurrected train set production in mid 1990's they really got back into it. Individual promotional piece production had been going on since the 60's non stop. As far as sets go they made them for Motorola, Rockwell Automation, John Deere, Harley Davidson, Napa, GM, Gaetano Spirits, Saturn, Richard Petty, McCormick Farmall/Case/International Harvester, Komastu, Monsanto as well as New Holland, Coca Cola and Joshen Paper/Packaging.

Most people consider Athearn or any other train manufacture collecting the items they made that were either offered to the general public. that would be cataloged or uncataloged items. Many of us stumble upon specially made sets or parts of sets by accident or in another way. People buying items do strange things. A few shows ago a man came to out table when Charlie had his Armstrong set by Athearn on sale. He came and a high price for the Locomotive only, not asking the price for the complete set with box and all original documents. All he wanted was the engine to which he got. My friend from to blocks away bought the rest of the set last Saturday. At a good price. Things like this happen. Now you would think that this was the crowning moment for train sale and acquisition this past weekend. Well I would say there was a much greater find displayed to us, then a meir limited addition set not offered to the general public. Here is a item. A one of a kind. Pre production complete body casting for a Pennsy R1 class electric made for mister Gorden Varney by Colonial Casting. Gorden want the pilot casting for the R1 to be made of the material used in the production model. This was to be Aluminum. This first one was brass or bronz. I don't know which it was. I just held it in my hands. This friend who always has a table with us at the Greenberg shows told us of this HO piece months ago and said he'd bring it in to show us and tell us the history of it. Well on both sat and sunday I held it. This guy also has a complete ho kit of the R1 with the Aluminum body. I think that Knights 89 also got see this. Don't remember if nelson or Pete got be see it. They may have. I would have to say that the Armstrong set was on a level with the one spoken of here and the R1 kit above that. The R1 brass body in a world beyond either Athearn kit.
Sean may have in his collection a Varney R1. I think I have seen it in pictures.

Larry:

Every time I see that color scheme, I am tempted to reporiduce it- even if only for one tank or box car! I have 3 Polyscale bottles of GN glacier green and can easily get the B&O gold.

It might well be a nice project to find another set of companies and create various cars- open and covered gondolas, box cars, tank cars with other national brands from the 1950s and 1960s- Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, etc.

Ron,
Are those the colors needed for that set? I have ~three sets that all need some sort of repair, either it be new roof walks or replaced steps.

As you can see below.. all three sets need some repair:

Sean,
they are the closest match indeed. I used B&O delux gold to paint a new platform for the tank car. I saved the broken original one and stashed it away.
