Very interesting--I've never heard of it either. The posting seems to imply that wheel spacing would have been accurate for OO, as opposed to British OO, which uses HO track. I'd like to see some more about this--I can't believe as long and deep as I've been in modeling, that I'm not familiar with this. On a semi-related note, I've read that Tyco/Mantua's old-time steamer and old-time articulated steamer are actually built to OO scale to make them larger enough to hold motors and detail.

Lionel, Scale-Craft and a few other companies made American OO in the 30's and 40's, but it pretty much died out after WWII in favor of HO.

That being said, a couple Mantua locos (the 4-6-0 and 4-8-0's in particular, and the older "Belle of the '80's") along with some "HO" cars that are closer to 4mm/1ft scale (there's a flatcar with Containers that's really OO for example). In addition, the early Aristo-Craft imports from Japan - which were proportioned to run on 42" gauge track (the "standard guage" on Japanese railroads) - were in effect OO/HO. AHM's loco's are also a bit oversized for HO, but not quite fully OO.

I have the privilege of owning some cars from Carl Appel's Norfolk & Ohio, which was a huge American OO layout in Allentown, PA that existed until a few years ago - so there is still a minor following in this scale (there's an NMRA Special Interest Group too).

Here's the Norfok & Ohio circa 1958 (from Model Railroader magazine):

And here's the "Drover's" caboose from the above on my shelf circa now:

The biggest problem I've found is locating track - Lionel is "collectable", Gargraves supposedly made some at some point, but I've yet to find any. So for now, my small collection of American OO has been temporarily converted to HO trucks/wheelsets, in effect becoming "American OO/HO"!

Thanks Ken - On3 track actually looks pretty good for very early or primative/logging-type trackage due to the wide (for 4mm scale) tie spacing - one can just trim the ties to a normal width - and leave them somewhat irregular for the primative look. Mainly I suffer from a complete lack of 3/4 inch gauge motive power - so I cheat and put HO trucks and wheelsets on my OO cars (I use HO 36" diameter wheels - which work out to 31.5" diameter in OO), and use "overscale" HO engines - my current "pets" are a Mantua logging Mallet and an ancient Aristo-Craft Camelback switcher - both of which are way over HO scale.
