I cant say I was the only one that let out a long groan in 2019, when lionel kicked off their new Lionel line with a batch of Butt - Ugly Berkshires. After hearing that they had taken over MRC/ Model Power/ Mantua, I was somewhat hopeful for Model Power and Mantua products. When 2020 rolled around, Lionels website boasted a new Mini - Catalog for the HO line. When I saw the front, I nearly choked.
Yes. It was true.
The line had returned. Mantua projects are set to graze the rails of our HO layouts once more.
Also, take a look at the tan backround of the page. An eagle eye such as mine will notice outlines of locomotives. There are outlines of an F Unit and.....
MY BOOSTER TANK!
this means lionel will be producing these locomotives, I even emailed Lionel and they somewhat hinted at it.
I'm very excited for these releases. And I cant wait to see what else Lionel has up their sleeve!
MSRP: $469.99 - HOLY COW! But typical of lionel. This is barely even a $200 locomotive. Possibly $150 at MOST!

Nice to see Lionel picking up the line, but considering the MSRP, where is the good news?
Granted they have can motors/flywheels/DCC, but geez. Most all of the Mantua steamers can be readily found on ebay for around $100, usually less.

Exactly. These are the later versions mantua and MRC produced before the line was dropped. The good news is that we will start seeing mantua again, considering it was a favoirute of many, including myself.

Well first off, the Berkshire are hideous by any standard of a modern HO modeler.
As for the new Mikados, I will disagree with ya'll on price point. While I feel a lot of Lionel is about 10% more expensive simply because of their name, I want to know how you propose any HO steam locomotive is going to sell for $150 list. A new DCC board typically goes for $50 by itself, and a new HO locomotive would cost $100 by itself... so I don't think it can be done.
That being said, $470 is insane. On Lionel's site right now they have the locomotives listed at $290, which sounds about right for trends within the industry and is comparable to Bachmann.
Still, I don't think you'll see me getting one, mostly on the part that after recent events I really want to avoid buying ANYTHING made in the PRC... but that's another subject.

Just got this email from Trainworld. Seems that Lionel has canceled production of all of their HO scale line, including the former Mantua products. Too bad.

Huh, so after buying out those three, they decided to quit the HO
line, altogether. That sounds like a huge waste of money.

Disappointing, only in the sense that these classic models won't be given a new production. :( Prices were high anyways.
Who else wishes Mantua, Tyco, or Model Power still existed?

What I really would like, though I know it's an empty wish, is to have Mantua (and MDC) back how they were when you could order parts from them. It was great for repairs and for kitbashing.
