So I have a chance to get a Tyco Amtrak F7 (PT drive), plus one each combine, coach and obs for $50 plus shipping (it's about 5 hours away from me).
This seems a bit high (it's Canadian funds), but the seller said a similar set went for over $80 on ebay. Seeing as it's Tyco and not very rare, should I go for this or pass?

It does seem a bit high to me, that's $12.50 a piece...or $20 for the PT loco and $10 a car. I'd have to say it all depends on how much this set interests you.

A brief look on ebay shows current and recent Amtrak sets that have sold for less than $50. There's a fully boxed set that might be worth the $50.

^^^Would be your best bet. However if it gets popular it might go for 75+ especially since its boxed. Also you're looking at an extra 25 dollars (at least for me) for shipping. But if you're just wanting to actually use them then the $50 deal is better.

The shipping on the few things I've bought recently has been a little absurd and the USD -> CDN exchange rate has been awful but I don't think the auction prices have been much worse. All that combined though, I've definitely overpaid on the last few things I bought. Better to overpay though on a few really good things I need than to get deals on lots of things I don't need.

Shipping is outrageous. Over $50 with import fees to Canada puts the set at over $100.

...and that's not even factoring in the conversion. That set would probably be about $130 shipped to Canada.

This one is IN Canada, and the shipping is still ridiculous. Canada Post really needs to get its act together. I'm seriously looking at getting a US PO box for any international purchases.

I've seen that Amtrak set a couple of times and also thought the price was high.

Nahhh, I can get it cheaper at train shows. I have a thing for shorty passenger cars though. I do have a couple of LL Amtrak cars tho.
