Hey, $10 ain't bad for a unique piece like that. Never seen one before.
I know the feeling though- get one dang piece, and then you have to
go crazy trying to find the other pieces in the set. Especially with
passenger coaches.

Athearn did not make this car for Lionel. I think by the time this was produced, it was Life-Like making HO rolling stock for Lionel. This car is no where near the quality of a typical Athearn car of the same time period. The molded on roof walk is a clear sign it is not Athearn made.

What a weird (in a good way) little car. Can't imagine it's a real prototype, I feel like it'd be horribly inefficient for transporting anything a hopper would, and pointless as anything requiring a gondola or flatcar generally doesn't need to be dumped. (Logs? maybe? Seems too short for that. Scrap? Wouldn't you use a crane or similar? Also too short).

I hope this convinces you that they are pretty close to prototypical. These would have been mostly used on short-lines and in mining operations where the need for tight radius curves and shorter cars would have been a must...

Well I stand corrected. I guess it was foolish to forget about mining/short-line railroads.

Those side dump cars were usually used for maintenance-of-way work, carrying ballast and rip-rap to places where it was needed along the line. The side dump feature allowed the material to be dropped off where it was needed along the right of way. On eary versions, the bed was mounted on a large central bearing with chains leading from the bed to points in both sides of the frame. If you take the chains off, the bed tilts to one side or the other. Later versions used compressed air to dump the bed. Modern day rock cars still work this way.

My COTW is this, ... Well, to drag me even further from my hobby table was the purchase of this 1965 Mustang Convertible. Will be removed from the 4WD parts and completely dismantled & restored to a stock factory appearance of red with a white top. This was left in a will to a friend of mine an hour & a half away. I just accidentally spotted it on Facebook when his son posted pics..

They are very hard to find. There were about 4 built and in nice condition, individually and correctly listed a couple months back. They sold for ~over $40 each. My $35-36 bid on each did not win any.

This one came with two other cars (plastic) for a total of $10 plus $7 shipping. Sometimes one gets lucky. I may have only one or two more complete pieces in my collection. But I am not sure. I know I have a couple incomplete and in rough shape.

Was pretty excited to get it and share it obviously. Has not even been delivered yet. Might get here today or tomorrow. I like to share the rare stuff most people don't know existed. Most of this stuff I have only discovered within the past 10 years. I went the previous 25 years only knowing about the basics, Athearn, Tyco, Bachmann, etc,, This 40s-60's stuff is pretty neat stuff in my opinion.

Sorry, Jeff... I missed your comment... I will stick with some small Ford V8 like a 289. Being unfamiliar with Mustangs I will have to research what they come with as I go. I will keep it as near original as I can though it wont be numbers matching... :) I'm currently restoring my 79 Trans Am but I'm more excited over the Mustang at this time...
