For this week, my COTW is an Illinois Central coach I got with my $60 engine and a ton of other freight cars yesterday that I later found was DCC sound fitted. This coach was made by Rivarossi and isn't all that great.

Nice car Stephen. My car this week is an auto transporter I picked up at the Houston train show last weekend. There is no name on the bottom on the car and it is missing 3 autos. Every thing else is intact.

It looks like a Bachmann to me, the autorack.Oh, and thanks. It doesn't do all that good on the tracks, though.

It's a lifelike, 80's release. I had one when I was a kid and loved it.

Microbusss has a rarity for sure there! GIMME! LOL! My COTW is a Revell MOW boxczr, usually you see this one in gray, but this one is oxide red. I don't think it's a common color for this car, as I've mostly seen gray ones.

It's pretty easy to do. Intermountain 33" wheelsets are a good fit, but I have used Kadees too. Check the NMRA website for calculating the amount of weight to add, they have a pretty good formula for figuring proper weights for any size car. Off the top of my head it should be around 6 or 6.5 oz. as a total weight for those coaches.

Hi Jerry. About this car. You can go through all the Revell information in HO Seeker and you will only find this car in red as a maintance of the way work car. The gray car will always be the track cleaner car. I would imagine that people have switched bodies to make different cars. A very easy thing to do. Many copies of both of the cars were made by Revell. Neither car be consider rare because of numbers made. What makes them rare is they are tied up in so many peoples collections and not seen except one here and there. When I clean my tracks I run a pair of GP7's pulling 4 or 5 of the track cleaners. Also the car was re-made by Walters who brings it out again every now and then. I have one by Walters. They painted to match more remakes of the True-Scale, Trainminiature, work cars. I have a complete set of Pennsylvania railroad ones in yellow. Frank

The Revell Track Cleaning Car was made in gray and cataloged T-5000. The red version was referred to as a Bunk Car and cataloged T-4160. The red car did not contain the track cleaning mechanism.
After Revell exited the HO train market in the 60's, Concor/Heljan obtain the Revell HO Tooling. They released the track cleaning car under the LaBelle Label. It was available in 6 roads: UP, SP, GN, PRR, SF & Southern.

Hey, thanks for that historical annotation, Waw47. I had no idea they made them in different road names, either, as I've seen either the gray track-cleaner, and this oxide red version for the most part. I *may* remember a yellow one by UP, but that memory is fuzzy. I always liked the shovel embedded in the side, and the off-kilter screen door detail, too. One reason it's a favorite of mine, it's a bit different than the regular HO stuff you find everyday. I can see why other people keep them in their collections as well.

Didn't Revell use that same body for a trackside shanty? I seem to recall one on my friend's layout when we were in High School. As far as track cleaning cars, my favourite is the Ulrich version.

Scale Craft
Yes, Revell used the track cleaning car shell for the Engine Crew Shanty (T-9033). They also used the caboose shell for the Yardmaster's Office (T-9032).

Revell schmevell If you want good MOW boxcars, the original Silver Streak release is where it's at! My set of 3 beats the Tru-Scale and Revell remakes hands down in terms of detail... also, IIRC Santa Fe was a common roadname for the Tru-Scale maintenance cars as well. And if anyone sees the bay-window box-caboose in plain MW grey, LET ME KNOW. I need it to complete my set!

I bought this same car about a month ago in its original box... missing the ramps on one end. All six Citations were intact... $5.00. Almost "mint" but the wheels were less to be desired.

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

John, I picked mine up at the last show I went to for $1.00. I guess it was cheap because it was missing 3 cars. Sooner or later I will find the missing cars.

Yep the gray plastic ones were the True scale and some were made by true scale and sold by Gilbert. I wonder if they were the same as the true scale release. Maybe like on all other Gilbert made by other companies they used Gilbert coupler pocket covers, and gilbert trucks ? * I know the one you need. I will look around. frank

I think that was actually the original colors for it because Mantua made a Shark loco in those same colors in the mid-late 50's. Cool find.
