Here's my COTW. A few old Tyco/Mantua confederate coaches that I got for my Rivarossi 4-4-0.

I got one to, in good shape, all decals. Do you want a 4th to make a quadrille? Test your locomotive's pulling power. PM for possible trade with something that doesn't quite fit your collection, but might fit mine.

Finally, some graffiti I can relate to. Painted on side of Tyco Jello box car, artist unknown, came out of Palmetto, Florida, from my sister May.

A couple of rare affordable antique store finds this weekend, a Tyco Sanka car and an Athearn 50' L&N flat with a trailer, new in the original box.

Arrgh, why can't I find a Sanka! Remember that old Sanka TV commercial where the guy is pitching a small fit and Joe Demaggio shows up holding a cup and saucer and big, sunny smile, saying, "here, Joe, try some Sanka..."
Come to think of it, maybe I need some Sanka...arrrgh!

I started my assault on Lionel operating car and here is the first of several. I love this radioactive waste car, but the light was not workig when I got it. I had to take the top part off and re-seat the red light. I think I am going to get the AEC husky, 3 more waste cars and the AEC caboose.

Ken, Those Funeral cars are rare and hard to find. Great find.
Jerry, The Sanka car is neat too. I wonder how many cups could be made with a load from a full size hopper.

My COTW is an HO scale Athearn 86 foot auto parts boxcar:
I added Atlas 100 ton roller bearing trucks and Kadee couplers. Them Atlas trucks make this car roll like it's gliding over the track!
I'm home schooled, I love to work on cars and anything with an engine and wheels, I love model RR'ing, and listening to Dire Straits.

Those funeral cars are pretty fine. Why was it they used the extra trucks? For a smoother ride?

Barry, if you Google "Lincoln Funeral Train" you'll get some interesting sites and info, but I have yet to see anything real in-depth on why it had the extra trucks. The car was built originally as the day's equivalent to "Air Force One", but Lincoln never rode in it while alive. My guess is that it was a particularly heavy car? Would like to learn more about it. There is a group in the process of building a replica of the train for 2015.

I know! Amazingly enough, this car runs fine on 18" radius curves. That's excellent for a car that long! Speaking of length, that car in HO scale is 1 foot long not counting the couplers.

I can't remember where I read it, but the Lincoln Funeral car had four trucks because it was heavy. Because, as one would expect of a presidential vehicle, it was armored; at least on the floor to protect it from explosive devices placed on the tracks.

That was Lincoln's funeral car, if I am not mistaken, that took his remains and entourage on a national tour of mourning before being laid to rest in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois. I believe the extra trucks were because the car was particularly heavy and rail was often light and bridges not that good in 1864.

Correction: Lincoln died in 1865 not 1864. Other than that it sounds correct. Sorry, just had to point that out.

It appears that this forum is trying to interpret the square brackets in the photobucket URL as some type of substitution command and not showing the whole thing as a link.
You can get to the picture by opening a new tab in your browser then copying the text of the link from the posting into the new tab's URL.
